The day of reckoning is upon me…

Some of you may remember a few weeks back, during one of my Citizen’s Academy classes I had volunteered to be shot with a taser. The full post is here:

Well, I have finally obtained the video of the event.

To refresh your memory of my description of being shot, I have copied the pertinent text from the above post:
…Standing there in my undershirt and khakis, with a person on each arm, my stress level started to rise again…. I hear the deputy calling out his actions (for safety) behind me:
Taser Loaded
Taser Ready

At this point, I had absolutely no control over my body. I reverted to what they described as “taser tourettes” and heard myself yell: Oh! Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu…..”
Only, it came out as “Oh FuuuUUuuuUUUuuUUUuuuUUuuuUUUUuuuuuUUUUuuuUUUuuuUUuu” in synchronicity with the frequency of the voltage running through me. My muscles seized at the -precise- moment the probes struck me, causing the exclamation, but subsequently not allowing me to either stop yelling, nor yell something else or lower my volume. I literally had no control, yet I was perfectly lucid and conscious of everything that was occurring; I just couldn’t do anything about it. As my mind continued to process what was occurring, I remember thinking, ok it’ll be done now…. ok maybe now… ok now… my god how long is this going to go?!?!?! All the time my muscles are completely contracted and I am halfway collapsed, but held up by the two volunteers and well as the rigidity of my entire body. All in all, I was tased for only 5 seconds.

Then, as quickly as it started, it was over any my body released allowing me to collapse to my knees. I was then instructed to lay on my stomach so the deputies could remove the barbed probes from my back. Oddly, this didn’t hurt at all since the probes self-cauterize as the entered. I took a second to regain my composure, and then stood up, put my shirt back on, and describe to the class what I just felt.

From the video, I could see my hands begin in a relaxed fist, then immediately the muscles contract into a very tense and malformed fist. If you were to see the video you may think that I am in pain through the full 5 second tasing; this isn’t true. There was really very little pain outside of the muscle soreness afterwards. Rather, what you are seeing is simply my inability to stop myself from vocalizing surprise; when it ends I am smiling and damn near giggling. I don’t think I’ll be doing it again, but it was a very interesting experience to finally know first hand what the body goes through when 50,000 volts pass through you. In this case the taser only puts out 7 joules, which is less than what a 9volt battery produces. Keep that in mind as I become completely and utterly incapacitated…..

  1. Tell me that isn’t begging for a YouTube remix! Hmmm… I could do with some Final Cut Pro effects practice! Mwahaha!! (Would I be that cruel? Nah, probably not…)

Seriously though, you’re a brave man! Ouch!

    1. I’m telling you it didn’t hurt. Only some muscle soreness afterwards. During the 5 seconds it was on, there wasn’t so much pain as just pure incapacitation. Not sure it was “brave” really, but just a desire to know first hand how it really felt.

  2. Holy crap I laughed loudly!! My co-workers wanted to know what I was laughing about, so I showed them…they were horrified and said I was mean to laugh LOL (how could I NOT laugh?!) BTW, you look good 😉

    1. LOL What horrifies me are people that are horrified by the video… Come on people, it isn’t doing ANY DAMAGE! And didn’t really hurt. I’d be surprised if you DIDN’T laugh… I mean damn, that is FUNNY!
(and thanks… I am actually down 30lbs from when the video was shot so it is even more evident now!)

    1. Well…

Honestly, it only looks bad… a number of people volunteered for it after me, but got it a bit easier at only a one second ride and with the probes taped on much closer together.

I was actually a bit surprised at how many people still got up to do it even after watching me do it. I know I probably wouldn’t have volunteered after watching me 🙂

At the very least it was entertaining to watch, and I really did learn a TON from actually doing it. Gave me a much better understanding of the taser as a tool which makes a number of these incidents in the media easier to understand now that all the myths have been dispelled for me. Well worth it on that end!
