So, here’s some cool news I almost forgot to share:

My dad called me last night to tell me the news. He had applied for entrance to the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts show as an exhibitor. This is a juried competition and from what I have gathered, very difficult to get in to. (Not to mention –very- political as well.)

For those of you not in the “know”, my dad is a lifetime artist who has done extensive illustration work for comic books, ad agencies (including his own), and his kid’s book reports… Since retirement he has devoted his time to honing his skills at watercolours, of which I am proud to own 4 of.

Moreso, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts is one of the state’s most premier art shows. Held in Laguna Beach, California (a renowned artists’ colony), the festival runs alongside the annual Pageant of the Masters shows. A bit taken from the website:

“California’s finest Summer art event is staged in a six-acre canyon park near the ocean in Laguna Beach. The stars of this summertime tradition, which began here in 1932, are over 140 of the Southland’s most accomplished artists. This is a rigorously juried show, requiring exhibitors to demonstrate and maintain high aesthetic standards. Their work is truly fine art! The artworks on display are for sale and represent a complete spectrum of art media: paintings, sculpture, pastels, drawings, serigraphs, photographs, ceramics, jewelry, etched and stained glass, weaving, fiber arts, handcrafted furniture, musical instruments, model ships, and even scrimshaw. All of the works are original art – another element that distinguishes the Festival of Arts from other shows”

He had made it past the first round of selections via negatives of his work, and had brought 3 watercolours to present for the juried show last Saturday. Apparently he just couldn’t wait and had to drive down to Laguna Beach yesterday to check the posting of accepted artists instead of waiting for notification via snail mail. And who could blame him!

He got in. More impressively, however, is that he placed 4th in the scored list making his art in the premier top tier of the 100+ artists who entered. As you can well imagine he is riding particularly high right now. This also means Jean and I will be making at least one trip down to see him while he is showing.

We won’t know his schedule for a while yet, but you can always keep updated via the Festival of Arts’ website here:

I just got back from a fairly full day. This morning it was off to breakfast with my parents and sister so they could celebrate my birthday. The food was good, and the company, well… my parents were fun.

We survived and just in the nick of time, as we had a 12:30pm appointment with Wendy at HB Tattoo. Yep, second sitting time and this one is serious 🙂
Tattoo talk and images behind the cut… You were warned
